Being There For Your Adopted Child
I was seeing a little girl in therapy and invited her mother to join us. The girl wanted to play “doctor” and I suggested that the mom be the doctor and I could watch. The mom reluctantly agreed, and did the daughter’s “check-up” regarding her daughter’s pretend problem of a sore throat.
After her mother finished the check-up, the little girl said, “I still feel the same.”
The mom replied, “Well, that’s really all I can do for you. I think you should go right to the hospital!”
I told the mother that I understood why she would say that, I thought that if she had one more appointment with her, she would feel much better!” Her daughter nodded in agreement. So, her mother checked her again. And, lo and behold, the girl’s throat problem disappeared.
Sometimes what your child needs is just one more appointment with you.
